Music has always been important to the people of the island. With electronics more accessible than ever before, it is commonplace for someone to be able to pop a CD into their D-battery powered stereo and share their portable music with groups of people. Oftentimes, gatherings of teenagers and young adults consist of one of these sitting on the ground outside as they chat, smoke, or do tricks on skateboards, sometimes all three.
With the grunge genre sweeping across western culture, new music is coming out all the time, and people are blaring the music they've found as well as trading CDs with their friends and family. Many of the older generation are annoyed by the trend, yelling at the kids to keep their trash music to themselves, but the general response is just to turn up the volume.
With possession of some form of musical talent prevalent across the island, several of these younger people have taken to playing alongside these stereos, adding more traditional harmonies or instrumentation to the mix. The genre of Celtic rock is forming on the island, over a decade in advance of the music's adoption in the rest of the world.
